When the MPLS VPN architecture was first introduced, it was envisaged that it would be used primarily to provide Layer-3 services to Enterprise customers who had a limited subset of IP routes. However, due to the popularity and large deployment base of this type of solution, many large Enterprises, smaller MPLS VPN service providers, and Internet service providers (ISPs) have seen advantages in the MPLS architecture and requested connectivity from an MPLS VPN backbone provider.
