3: Scene characterization
Abstract
The understanding of the scattering mechanism between the electromagnetic wave and the scene is a fundamental step for extracting the geometrical and electromagnetic properties of the investigated area.
In this chapter, we discuss some quantities useful to representing an electromagnetic wave and few simple scattering models, whose range of validity with respect to frequency, view angles, polarization, and surface characteristic, is matching to the typical imaging radars parameters and applications. We discuss also the speckle, which is a noise contribution typical of coherent imaging systems.
