8.1 Introduction
Driven by a host of emerging applications, problems of distributed source coding have received increased attention in recent years. Although the underlying information-theoretic results by Slepian and Wolf [1] for distributed lossless coding, Wyner and Ziv [2] for lossy coding with decoder side information, and Berger [3] for multiterminal (MT) source coding have been known for more than 30 years, practical schemes did not appear until recently (e.g., [4,5]).
