13.1 Introduction

Image retrieval, a technique for browsing, searching, and retrieving images from a large database of digital images, has been an active research area since the 1970s. Especially, the explosive growth of digital images due to the advances in the Internet and digital imaging devices greatly necessitates effective and efficient image retrieval techniques.
