Inherently Safer Design

Abstract

The application of a series of principles to inherently mitigate the potential hazards during process development is popularly known as inherently safer design (ISD). ISD principles can be categorized as the following four: minimization (intensification), substitution, moderation (attenuation), and simplification. Based on these principles, protection systems are adopted in designing an inherently safer process. However, protection measures that are needed to be adopted for ISD are considered as either active or passive protection systems.
