Quite a few tools are available that focus on characterizing the performance of databases or the disk subsystems on which they reside. Each disk subsystem vendor, in fact, has developed tools for load testing and performance monitoring, which is unsurprising given that disk subsystem vendors are no strangers to having to “prove” the performance of their systems; most long-term enterprise system throughput bottlenecks tend to be disk related, after all.
