Since the early years of both radio and television, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC/Commission) has regulated station ownership, limiting the number of stations that may be licensed to any one entity and restricting the ownership of stations by owners of other media. In the past two decades, the Commission’s ownership rules have been the subject of debate and legislation in Congress, review and revision at the Commission, and challenges before various United States Courts of Appeals.
