Abstract

This chapter succinctly presents the mathematical foundation that is necessary to understand the mechanical, chemical, thermal, and electrical properties that characterize materials at the nanometric scale. This approach is necessarily based on the use of quantum theory, which describes the properties of materials at the atomic and molecular scales. This subject is further elaborated at a basic theoretical level to understand the need for the use of quantum theory to describe material properties at the nanometric scale.
