Abstract
This chapter succinctly presents the mathematical foundation that is necessary to understand the mechanical, chemical, thermal, and electrical properties that characterize materials at the nanometric scale. This approach is necessarily based on the use of quantum theory, which describes the properties of materials at the atomic and molecular scales.
