3.1 Introduction

Environmental, ecological, and health problems require the increasingly stringent emissions regulations of harmful and toxic gases. These regulations include corresponding limits on nitrogen oxides (NO_x), particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC) emissions from vehicle engines [1]. Greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO₂, are also under increasing scrutiny [2].
