Introduction

The transmitting antenna is the final link in the long chain from the studio microphone to the listener over which the broadcaster has any control, and yet it is often the least regarded portion of that chain. “Out of sight, out of mind” often best describes the engineer’s approach to the antenna, and while a well-designed, well-implemented antenna installation should be able to be forgotten for the most part, the quality of its assembly and installation will determine for just how long it is likely to stay “out of mind.”
