Chapter 18. Emergency Care

Provision of emergency care within the hospital setting is primarily the domain of the registered nurse; however, there are times when the licensed practical nurse is responsible for assessing and intervening for the client in an emergency situation. This section will cover basic aspects of emergency care that might be provided by the licensed practical nurse.

A primary principle in providing emergency care is triage, or the sorting of clients into one of three categories:

Emergent

Urgent

Nonurgent
