The Context of Conflict

Abstract

This chapter suggests that history is the story of conflict. Human conflict remains the most misunderstood human issue; if conflict is not well understood, then resolving or managing it will not be effective. This chapter provides readers with several positive outcomes of conflict as well as its dysfunctions. Causes of conflict are discussed and culturally learned conflict perceptions (referred to as JABs— Judgments, Attributes, and Blame) are explained. The author's observations about conflict, including 10 reasons for conflict and how conflict escalates are included.
