In this chapter, I discuss how to create and consume XML Web services. An XML Web service is a programmable application component that is accessible using standard Internet protocols, primarily HTTP. The .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET have a substantial amount of technology that is designed to make it simple to create and consume XML Web services. This chapter gives you a high-level introduction to this technology. Given that the primary purpose of this book is to discuss interoperability and migration, I won't go in depth into Web services in this chapter.
