7. Middle East and East Asian Cultures
THE EXAMPLES WE HAVE USED IN THIS BOOK up to this point have been based on Latin “left-to-right” languages and languages based on simple scripts. The conclusions we have drawn have been sufficient for most northern European languages, such as French, German, and Spanish. In terms of world population, however, we have not yet covered a large part of the world. Middle Eastern languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian (Farsi), and East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean all have additional considerations that we need to make to correctly internationalize our applications. This chapter covers these considerations.
