7.1 Data Sanitization Program
For most organizations, employee computers (including desktops, laptops, and tablets) pose the most pressing need for a defined data sanitization program. The fear of an embarrassing or damaging leak occurring because one of these devices ends up in the wrong hands is usually what sparks the creation of such a program. Many organizations with an IT department of one or two people may have a closet full of old clunky laptops and tower computers just because the fear is there but the program for processing them has not been initiated. Perhaps they even use DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to erase them and then list them for sale on eBay, or donate them to charity. Office-supply chains have computer disposal services.
