Provider Backbone Bridging with VPLS

Abstract

Scaling VPLS to an extremely large number of instances in a Service Provider Network has always been a topic of interest. In this chapter, we will look at some of the issues involved in scaling P2P and MP2MP L2VPNs (VPLS) with some operational examples.

We will also look at one such mechanism which intended to address this problem. Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB) integrated with VPLS intended to address the scaling concerns – with a key focus on limiting the scope of MAC flooding within a VPLS domain.

In this chapter we take a look at the PBB-VPLS architecture.
