Configuring Software Flow Sensors
Suppose you need flow export on a network but don't have any switches that support flow export. Never fear, you can implement a flow sensor in software instead of buying new hardware.
Using software instead of hardware for flow sensing has limitations. For one, software needs to run on a server, so it adds another device to your network. Also, you can only capture data from a managed Ethernet switch. The software might not capture all the traffic, and it might not tell you when it misses something. And flow sensor software is yet another thing that the network administrator must configure, patch, and maintain. Don't you have enough to do already? Still, for a small network, software is the only realistic choice. ...
