In the previous chapter, we provided an overview of management communication patterns and how management protocols are effectively applied in practice. In this chapter, we finally take a closer look at the management protocols themselves—the specific languages that managers and agents use to communicate with each other and exchange requests, responses, and event messages. The presented protocols constitute a sampling of what are arguably the most important and widely deployed network management protocols today, but it should be mentioned that they are by no means the only ones that exist.
