10.1 Introduction

Gordon Moore, who was the cofounder of Intel, predicted ‘Transistor density of minimum‐cost semiconductor chips would double roughly every 18 months’. The prediction was made in 1965 and it has been more than five decades since then, but still the predicted trend holds its ground. This has led to its being called Moore’s law. The density of transistors is directly related to the processing speed and inversely related to the cost of the microprocessor. The effect of Moore’s law is that the performance of a processor is doubling up every 2 years, and the capacity of memory for the same covered area doubles up every 18 months. This has led to miniaturization of the computers and other computing systems over the past few years, as well as reduction in their cost. The advancements in microprocessor and computing technology have made available laptops, mobile phones, and iPADs at affordable cost at the grassroots level. This has led to the application of computing systems in all imaginable applications, scenarios, and geographic domains.
