Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX)
IPX/SPX is the native protocol that was used, until recently, on Novell networks. Today even Novell, creator of IPX/SPX, has started using TCP/IP as the default protocol.
IPX/SPX was developed by Novell with a bit of help from Xerox. (IPX was based on an early protocol called Xerox Network System [XNS], and SPX was based on another Xerox protocol, Sequenced Packet Protocol [SPP].) During the reign of the Novell operating system, those working with networks would certainly have had to be very familiar with IPX/SPX. Today, however, you might never come in contact with it.
