This chapter covers the following CompTIA-specified objectives for the “Protocols and Standards” section of the Network+ exam.
Identify the basic characteristics (for example, speed, capacity, media) of the following WAN technologies:
Packet switching versus circuit switching

Frame Relay
SONET/SDH
T1/E1
T3/E3
OC-x
Wide area networking is one of the most interesting aspects of a network. Although for the Network+ exam, you will not be expected to understand detailed information about WANs, you will be expected to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the most commonly used WAN technologies.
