Postfix, which is a standard part of most Linux distributions, is one of the most popular mail server programs on the Internet. You can use Postfix as an alternative to expensive mail server programs, such as Microsoft Exchange Server, to provide email services for your LAN. This chapter shows you how to set up and use Postfix on a Linux server.

Before Postfix, Sendmail was the most popular mail server for Linux. Sendmail still works, and there are plenty of Sendmail servers still running. But Postfix is faster, more secure, and easier to manage, so it has pretty much taken over.
