Understanding Disk Storage

We’re all familiar with using disk drives to store data: Every Windows computer system in use today has some sort of disk storage on which data is stored. The following sections explain some of the underlying concepts of disk storage you need to understand as you plan how disk storage can be shared on a network.

Hard disk drives

A traditional disk drive stores data on rotating disks that are covered with magnetic material. A disk of this type is often called a hard disk drive (HDD), though sometimes the term spinning disk is used.
