Layer 5 – the session layer

The session layer is responsible for managing sessions between the devices. Management of sessions includes establishing the session, synchronizing the communication between the devices, and terminating the session.

It is on this layer that the devices agree upon the type of communication that's going to take place including the following:

  • Simplex
  • Half-duplex
  • Full-duplex

The protocols that are supported on this layer include the following:

  • RPC
  • SQL
  • NetBIOS
  • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)

Now, let's learn about the transport layer.
