ICMPv6

I have mentioned neighbor discovery several times in this chapter. This functionality is part of the ICMPv6 protocol. You should recall that ICMP is the underlying protocol that provides us with tools such as ping, tracert, and pathping. We can tell these commands to specifically use either IPv4 or IPv6 by adding the -4 or -6 switches. Figure 12.12 shows the help option of the ping command, and we can see the two switches listed at the bottom:

The neighbor discovery portion of ICMPv6 allows for the following to take place:

  • RS
  • RA
  • NS (including DAD)
  • NA
