From a young age, Marina felt like she was wasting time if she wasn’t actively doing something. By high school, she had learned how to fill all her hours—first with school, then with soccer or track after school, then homework until midnight. She also got a job at an ice cream shop and, later, a pizza place. To build her academic résumé, she added student council, class vice president, school board student representative, and vice president of the Key Club. She topped it off with volunteering at Big Brothers Big Sisters.
