Performance Standards for Food Safety

Mr. President, we urge you to adopt broad and consistent use of product performance standards as the centerpiece of foodborne pathogen regulation. Performance standards help assure product safety, maintain consumer confidence, and provide economic incentives for industry to find more efficient means of meeting food safety goals. This action would build on and strengthen already accepted principles of food safety regulation. In some instances, it will require legislative change; in other cases, sufficient legal authority already exists.
