General Guidelines

When dealing with any challenging situation or participant, keep in mind four important goals:

  1. Stop the dysfunctional behavior. Your first objective is to get the person or persons to stop their disruptive behavior.

  2. Keep the individual(s) engaged. Your second objective is to prevent the person from shutting down and not participating at all.

  3. Keep the rest of the group involved. Your third objective is to prevent others in the group from shutting down. Remember that others will judge you by the way you handle difficult situations.
