Abstract:
This chapter discusses innovation in textiles and product development and the driving forces behind these advances. The chapter first reviews factors in the cultural, social and technological sectors that impact market demand. Textiles that respond to functional requirements, environmental sustainability demands and sensing issues (smart, interactive, electronic textiles) are reviewed. Lastly, textiles that marry artisan techniques with synthetic technologies are discussed.
