THE 1980S, HEADY YEARS of Journal expansion at home and abroad, also were years of far-ranging overseas exploration with colleagues and friends. The 1981 trip through China with Barbara and Dow Jones companions, my third China visit, was followed in 1983 by travel with Barbara, daughter Nina, and Dow Jones executives to Brussels, Berlin, and then on to the Soviet Union. It was our first trip to Russia, and the cold war still was under way. The next year we went aboard the Dow Jones Gulf-stream 3 jet with Journal editors to the Middle East—Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan—soon after Israel’s incursion into Lebanon in its attempt to expel Palestine Liberation Organization fighters there who had been launching raids across the border ...
