THE 1980S, HEADY YEARS of Journal expansion at home and abroad, also were years of far-ranging overseas exploration with colleagues and friends. The 1981 trip through China with Barbara and Dow Jones companions, my third China visit, was followed in 1983 by travel with Barbara, daughter Nina, and Dow Jones executives to Brussels, Berlin, and then on to the Soviet Union. It was our first trip to Russia, and the cold war still was under way.
