Smart Wireless Devices

10.1 Introduction

The End-User Device is a very key component of the mobile wireless communications ecosystem. The devices connect the end-users with the voice and data communications networks. The design and performance requirements have significantly changed in the last few years due to the emergence of data and Internet services. The devices are turning from a mere voice only tool to a data centric and multimedia rich commodity. We have also started witnessing the take-off of EV-DO and HSPA and EV-DO and WiMAX dual mode devices in some markets.

Simple wireless devices usually include low to mid end voice centric non multimedia mobile phones whereas Smart wireless devices include higher end mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and data cards. The fundamentals of smart wireless devices are discussed in this chapter.

The various key components of the devices, namely, user interface, mobile software platform, RF front end, processors, and so on, are discussed in Sections 2–7. Mobile Device Management which is intended for diagnosis and configuration management is discussed in Section 8. Some key techniques that can enhance the performance of devices are briefly described in Section 9. Section 10 looks into the role of various standard development organizations while we provide snapshots of some key devices in Section 11. Some industry updates related to devices and chapter summary is provided in the following sections.
