Landscape and Nature Photography

Taking landscape photos is easy; however, taking great landscape photos is much more difficult. Landscapes have long been a popular subject for photographers—after all, they are everywhere. Whereas other types of photography—such as action, concert, and sports—require capturing split-second movements, landscape photography is about patiently waiting for the light to be just right to achieve the look and feel that you want. Pay attention and you can be ready to push the shutter-release button at just the right moment.

8.10 The green-blue water shown here made for an interesting view, so I decided to fill the majority of the frame with it. To bring out the details, I dialed in -1 exposure compensation. Exposure: ISO 100, f/14, 1/200 second.

Inspiration

It seems that as technology increasingly encroaches on our lives and everybody is always in a hurry, the natural beauty in our world gets lost. Taking landscape photographs makes you slow down and take it all in. There are times when the view is somber, like at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California, shown in Figure 8.11. However, even a cemetery can become a beautiful photo.
