Shooting Still Pictures in Live View Mode
After sorting out the focusing options, the rest of the steps involved in taking a picture in Live View mode are essentially the same as for viewfinder photography. Before I show you the steps, though, I need to bring up a few issues about certain picture-taking settings:
- Image Area: You must select this Shooting menu option, which determines whether the FX or DX imaging area of the sensor is used, before turning on Live View. See the first part of Chapter 2 for details on this setting. (If you don't care to flip there now, just stick with the default settings: Auto DX Crop set to On and Choose Image Area set to FX.)
- Image Size and Image Quality: You must set these options via the Shooting menu. You can't press the Qual button and rotate the command dials as you can during viewfinder photography because that button magnifies the display in Live View mode.
Picture Control: Change the Picture Control setting quickly by pressing the button shown in the margin here. A list of the styles appears on the monitor; press the Multi Selector up and down to select a setting. As you change the setting, the display updates to show you the effect of your setting. Press the button again to return to the Live View display.
