Chapter 2: Nikon D800 Essentials
After you’ve acquainted yourself with all the buttons, dials, switches, and the changes to the aforementioned gadgets it’s time to get familiarized with the essential operation of your camera.
Of course, if you’ve been using Nikon cameras for awhile, you may not need all of this information, but with the rapidly changing technology of digital photography today you might be surprised what you might have missed out on. The D800 has many new upgrades and features.
Knowing which modes and features to use in any given situation will allow you to get a good exposure no matter what.
Exposure Modes
The most important feature of your camera is the exposure modes. These modes allow you to control exactly how your camera controls the exposure settings.
Unlike some of the more entry-level cameras that Nikon offers, the D800 doesn’t have scene modes, which means that you have some level of control of the exposure settings no matter which of the exposure modes is selected. In any shooting situation you can adjust the settings in a split second, which is exactly why most serious photographers use these modes as opposed to scene modes that lock you into the settings that the camera chooses.
You can easily switch among the four exposure modes by pressing the MODE button () and rotating the Main Command dial.
