Chapter 12

Novel nonlinear phenomena

Abstract

The development of highly nonlinear fibers discussed in Chapter 11 has led to the observation of novel nonlinear effects such as the generation of extremely broad optical spectra (supercontinuum generation) and large Raman-induced frequency shifts that allow wavelength tuning of mode-locked lasers. These nonlinear phenomena are finding a multitude of new applications for optical fibers in fields as diverse as high-precision metrology and optical coherence tomography. This chapter focuses on several such nonlinear effects, while Chapter 13 is devoted to supercontinuum generation. We revisit in Sections 12.1 and 12.2 the topics of soliton fission and intrapulse Raman scattering, discussed earlier in Section ...
