The GroupWise mail format is a proprietary format; although GroupWise supports many open standards, it is not an open system. Due to its proprietary format, translation is required in order to communicate with other systems.

The GroupWise Internet Agent is the most popular translator for GroupWise, because it allows GroupWise users to send e-mail messages to recipients via the Internet. It does much more than that, however. It also provides access to the GroupWise system from five different open-standard protocols.
