Post-Modernism

INTRODUCTION

Post-modernism emerges in the late twentieth-century as a sharp reaction against the negative consequences of modernity. Post-modernism challenges some basic assumptions of modernity. Post-modernism first emerges in the field of art and literature, and later on in other disciplines. It rejects the idea that there is a single meaning of truth.

It subscribes to the idea that there are multiple truths and multiple realities. There is no objective reality and rejects the idea of meta-narrative. The term post-modernism was first used by Jean Francois Lyotard in his book ‘The Post-Modern Condition (1979).
