Constituent Assembly
INTRODUCTION
M. N. Roy proposed the concept of a constituent assembly for the first time in 1934. The Congress Party adopted the demand as an official demand in 1935. In 1938, Jawaharlal Nehru declared that the ‘Constitution of free India must be framed, without outside interference, by a Constituent Assembly elected on the basis of the adult franchise’. This was accepted by the British in the August Offer of 1940.
Elections for the constituent assembly were held under the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946. The constituent assembly was formed to draft a constitution for independent India.
