Civil Society Groups in India
INTRODUCTION
According to World Bank, Civil Society refers to a wide array of organizations, community groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), labor unions, indigenous groups, charitable organizations, faith-based organizations, professional associations and foundations.
Civil Society is a broader concept that encompasses all those institutions and associations that lie outside the realm of state or market. Hence, it is often referred to as the third sector of the society. Globally, the term ‘Civil Society’ became popular in 1980s when it started to be identified with non-state movements defying authoritarian regime especially in Eastern Europe and Latin America.
