Airlift loop reactors

Abstract

Gasliquid two-phase flow in an airlift loop reactor (ALR) is addressed both experimentally and with numerical simulations. Mathematical models combining multiphase flow, mass, and heat transfer are set up and verified. The closure of the Eulerian multi-fluid model, turbulence model with wide applications, and mass/heat transfer in multiphase flow is discussed. Numerical methods and computational procedures developed in recent years to promote the convergence of multiphase flow in airlift loop reactors are also described. The influence of geometric parameters and operating parameters on the hydrodynamics in an ALR is summarized, and guidelines for design and scale-up of ALRs are suggested. Micromixing ...
