10.2. Performing Backups

Your backup strategy depends on the activity of your database, the level of availability required by your service-level agreements (SLAs), and how much downtime you can tolerate during a recovery effort.

In this section, we'll first review some terminology, and then we will show you a way to back up the control file to a text file that you can edit and use in case of the loss of all control files. Finally, we will introduce Recovery Manager and show you how to make some of the backups we describe in the terminology review.
