A number of structures and events in the database directly support backup and recovery operations. The control files maintain the list of database files in the database, along with a record of the most recent database backups (if you are using RMAN for your backups). The checkpoint (CKPT) background process works in concert with the database writer (DBW n) process to manage the amount of time required for instance recovery; during instance recovery, the redo log files are used to synchronize the datafiles.
