Understanding Network-based File Systems

A network-based file system performs two tasks: It has to translate the way a file system is presented on its host to some form a client system can support. It also has to present the file system in such a way that the remote user doesn’t need to understand the translation process in order to use the files.

Keeping the look of a file simple—an object with a name and location—is a paramount goal. Network file systems thus help to make files from a remote machine appear as local ones. Users may know the files they need are stored on a remote machine, but under normal operation they don’t have to think about it.
