Understanding ZFS
I must say it feels very, very odd to describe the ufs file system in just a paragraph or two after decades of using it. The ufs files system has enjoyed a long, long run. However, it’s time to move on, and ZFS is an outstanding replacement. Before I do, I’ll say on behalf of old-school Solaris administrators everywhere, ufs isn’t dead just because the exam doesn’t mention it. You may well see it at a site with a very large amount of stored legacy data. Then again, you might not see it at all. Time will tell.
One thing you miss by omitting the details of ufs is its history, much of which informs the many innovations ZFS has incorporated into file system management, making it so much easier and so much different. ZFS is the result ...
