Administering ZFS File Systems
At the heart of a ZFS file system’s configuration is its property list. Every file system can be customized through property settings. Many of these settings don’t interfere with the file system’s availability, making the administrator’s job less tedious. A ZFS administrator can make most changes on the fly, avoiding the unmount-change-remount sequence that many other file system types require. Many zfs subcommands just read and modify these property settings for you, incorporating additional checks and steps that raise them from a mere convenience to a robust aid.
