Understanding the Role of SMF
SMF can be a difficult thing to appreciate on first sight. It replaces a system for managing kernel services and long-running processes, sometimes just called run control, that UNIX administrators have used for decades. SMF implementation is quite different from run-control implementation, and requires not just new skills but a different way of thinking about system management. These changes not only take time to learn, they diverge from a well-known model that remains on other UNIX variants. Some experienced admins want to know if they can work around this new system or at least minimize its intrusion on their daily work. The answer is no, which doesn’t make anyone happy.
