Understanding the Image Packaging System (IPS)
In this chapter, you’ll learn to use a new type of software management tool called the Image Packaging System (IPS). IPS replaces a decades-long utility known to many as System V Release 4 (SVR4) packaging, a software management scheme once held as a standard among several major UNIX vendors, including Sun Microsystem, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM. At one time, the SVR4 standard was a boon to anyone who had to manage packaging on two or more of these platforms in the course of a day’s work.
