Verifying Network Operations
Most people who have had to troubleshoot a network issue have learned to use the ping utility. Given a proper IP address for a target, the ping utility will tell you if the target heard you. This conversation, however, relies on quite a few assumptions that may not hold. Those assumptions include the following:
