The early 20th century was one of the richest eras of scientific discoveries as was the mid-19th century for industrial development with the invention of the steam engine. To name some of the most important discoveries, one can think of quantum mechanics, relativity, but also diverse scattering mechanisms of light from matter, such as Rayleigh, Raman and Brillouin scattering.
