Although we primarily think of Excel as a number cruncher, it also provides several capabilities for working with collections of information—databases. Excel enables you to view and manipulate data records and field information in a database table. You can sort records in your table, filter the records, and import or connect to external data sources.
In this chapter, we look at Excel’s database capabilities, including a number of different table-manipulation tools and data tools. We also look at grouping and ungrouping ranges in a table and creating subtotals in a table. We wrap up the chapter with a discussion of PivotTables, which provide you with a dynamic way to view and analyze worksheet data.
